History

The Hindu Temple Society of North America grew out of meetings in the living room of Alagappa Alagappan and was founded in 1970. It bought the site of a former Russian Orthodox church in Flushing and built a temple whose face recalls the temples of South India.

The temple was consecrated on 4 July 1977 and reconsecrated in 2009. Beside Ganapati it now holds sannidhis for Venkateswara, Shiva and Parvati, Durga, Murugan, Hanuman, the Navagrahas and many more. The Temple Canteen downstairs, opened in 1993, feeds thousands of people every week.
