On Diwali, the new-moon night of Kartik, Maa Lakshmi is believed to visit every home that is clean, lit and welcoming. She rose from the churning of the ocean and chose Lord Vishnu, and on this night she is worshipped with Lord Ganesh, who is honoured first as the remover of obstacles and giver of wisdom, so that wealth comes with good sense. Kubera is worshipped for wealth that stays, and business families open new account books with 'Shubh Labh' and a swastik. The puja is done in the evening in Pradosh kaal, ideally during the steady (sthir) lagna; check the muhurat for your city. Afterwards the whole home is lit with diyas to welcome the Goddess.

दीपावली, कार्तिक अमावस्या की रात, माना जाता है कि माँ लक्ष्मी हर उस घर में आती हैं जो स्वच्छ, प्रकाशित और स्वागतपूर्ण हो। वे समुद्र मंथन से प्रकट हुईं और भगवान विष्णु का वरण किया; इस रात उनकी पूजा गणेश जी के साथ होती है, जिन्हें बाधाएँ दूर करने और बुद्धि देने वाले के रूप में पहले पूजा जाता है, ताकि धन के साथ विवेक भी आए। स्थिर धन के लिए कुबेर की पूजा होती है, और व्यापारी परिवार 'शुभ लाभ' और स्वस्तिक के साथ नए बही-खाते आरंभ करते हैं। पूजा संध्या के प्रदोष काल में, हो सके तो स्थिर लग्न में की जाती है; अपने शहर का मुहूर्त देखें। इसके बाद पूरे घर को दीयों से सजाकर माँ का स्वागत किया जाता है।

Step 1
Clean the whole home, make a rangoli at the entrance, hang a toran of marigold and mango leaves, and draw small kumkum footprints of Lakshmi entering the house.
पूरे घर की सफाई करें, द्वार पर रंगोली बनाएँ, गेंदे व आम के पत्तों का तोरण लगाएँ और घर में प्रवेश करते लक्ष्मी जी के छोटे कुमकुम चरण बनाएँ।
Step 2
In the evening bathe and wear new or clean clothes. Set up a chowki in the north or north-east, covered with a red cloth, and make a small heap of rice or a swastik on it.
शाम को स्नान कर नए या साफ वस्त्र पहनें। उत्तर या ईशान कोण में लाल कपड़ा बिछाकर चौकी रखें और उस पर चावल की ढेरी या स्वस्तिक बनाएँ।
Step 3
Place a kalash of water with a coin, supari and mango leaves, topped with a coconut. Place Ganesh on the left and Lakshmi on the right (as you face them); add Kuber, Saraswati, your account books, pen and cash box.
सिक्का, सुपारी और आम के पत्तों वाला जल का कलश रखें, ऊपर नारियल रखें। सामने से देखने पर बाईं ओर गणेश जी और दाईं ओर लक्ष्मी जी रखें; कुबेर, सरस्वती, बही-खाते, कलम और गल्ला भी रखें।
Step 4
Light a large ghee diya that will burn through the night, and an oil diya beside it.
रात भर जलने वाला बड़ा घी का दीपक और उसके पास तेल का दीपक जलाएँ।
Step 5
Purify with Ganga jal and take a sankalp with water, akshat and flowers in your right hand, saying your name, gotra and wish.
गंगाजल से शुद्धि करें और दाहिने हाथ में जल, अक्षत और फूल लेकर अपना नाम, गोत्र और मनोकामना बोलते हुए संकल्प लें।
Step 6
Worship Lord Ganesh first: tilak, durva, flowers and modak or laddu, chanting 'ॐ गं गणपतये नमः'.
पहले गणेश जी की पूजा करें: तिलक, दूर्वा, फूल और मोदक या लड्डू, 'ॐ गं गणपतये नमः' का जाप करते हुए।
Step 7
Worship Maa Lakshmi: if the idol or coin is metal, bathe it with panchamrit and then clean water. Offer a red chunri, kumkum, lotus or marigold flowers, kamal gatta, coriander seeds, khil-batashe, sweets and fruits, and chant 'ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः' 108 times.
माँ लक्ष्मी की पूजा करें: धातु की प्रतिमा या सिक्का हो तो पंचामृत से और फिर शुद्ध जल से स्नान कराएँ। लाल चुनरी, कुमकुम, कमल या गेंदे के फूल, कमलगट्टा, धनिया, खील-बताशे, मिठाई और फल अर्पित करें, और 'ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः' का 108 बार जाप करें।
Step 8
Worship Kuber, the account books (write 'शुभ लाभ' and a swastik in them), the pen and the cash box or locker.
कुबेर, बही-खातों (उनमें 'शुभ लाभ' और स्वस्तिक लिखें), कलम और तिजोरी या गल्ले की पूजा करें।
Step 9
Sing the aartis in order: 'Jai Ganesh Deva', 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata', and 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare'.
क्रम से आरती गाएँ: 'जय गणेश देवा', 'ॐ जय लक्ष्मी माता' और 'ॐ जय जगदीश हरे'।
Step 10
Take the lit diyas from the altar and place them all around the home: the entrance, kitchen, water place, tulsi, balcony and rooftop. Keep the main ghee diya burning all night.
पूजा के जलते दीये पूरे घर में रखें: द्वार, रसोई, जल स्थान, तुलसी, बालकनी और छत। मुख्य घी का दीपक रात भर जलने दें।
Step 11
Offer khil-batashe and sweets as prasad, touch elders' feet for blessings and share sweets with neighbours.
खील-बताशे और मिठाई का प्रसाद चढ़ाएँ, बड़ों के पैर छूकर आशीर्वाद लें और पड़ोसियों के साथ मिठाई बाँटें।

The Diwali Lakshmi-Ganesh puja welcomes prosperity, wisdom and harmony into the home for the year ahead. Worshipping Ganesh with Lakshmi asks that wealth come with good sense, and lighting every corner of the home is a prayer that darkness, in every form, leaves it.
