Maha Ashtami, the eighth day of Sharad Navratri, is the heart of Durga Puja. The Goddess is worshipped as Mahagauri, her eighth form. In Bengal the morning brings the Ashtami pushpanjali, when the whole community offers flowers with mantras, and Kumari Puja, in which a young girl is worshipped as the living Goddess. At the meeting point of Ashtami and Navami comes the Sandhi Puja: for those 48 minutes, when Devi took the form of Chamunda to slay the demons Chanda and Munda, 108 lotuses are offered and 108 lamps are lit. In North India many families end their Navratri fast with Kanya Pujan on this day.

शारदीय नवरात्रि का आठवाँ दिन, महा अष्टमी, दुर्गा पूजा का हृदय है। इस दिन माँ के आठवें रूप महागौरी की पूजा होती है। बंगाल में सुबह अष्टमी पुष्पांजलि होती है, जब पूरा समाज मंत्रों के साथ पुष्प अर्पित करता है, और कुमारी पूजा में एक छोटी कन्या को साक्षात देवी मानकर पूजा जाता है। अष्टमी और नवमी के मिलन पर संधि पूजा होती है: इन 48 मिनटों में, जब देवी ने चामुंडा रूप लेकर चंड और मुंड का वध किया था, 108 कमल अर्पित किए जाते हैं और 108 दीप जलाए जाते हैं। उत्तर भारत में कई परिवार इसी दिन कन्या पूजन करके नवरात्रि का व्रत खोलते हैं।

Step 1
Wake early, bathe, wear clean (ideally new or red) clothes and take a sankalp for the Ashtami puja and fast.
प्रातः स्नान कर साफ (हो सके तो नए या लाल) वस्त्र पहनें और अष्टमी पूजा व व्रत का संकल्प लें।
Step 2
Offer Ganga jal to the Navratri kalash and the akhand jyoti, and worship Lord Ganesh first.
नवरात्रि कलश और अखंड ज्योति को गंगाजल अर्पित करें और पहले गणेश जी की पूजा करें।
Step 3
Worship Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Durga, with white and red flowers, roli, akshat and a red chunri; offer coconut as bhog.
माँ के आठवें रूप महागौरी की सफेद व लाल फूल, रोली, अक्षत और लाल चुनरी से पूजा करें; नारियल का भोग लगाएँ।
Step 4
Offer the solah shringar to the Goddess: sindoor, bindi, bangles, alta, mehndi, kajal and the rest.
माँ को सोलह श्रृंगार अर्पित करें: सिंदूर, बिंदी, चूड़ियाँ, आलता, मेहंदी, काजल आदि।
Step 5
Ashtami pushpanjali: holding flowers and bel leaves in folded hands, chant 'Om Jayanti Mangala Kali Bhadrakali Kapalini, Durga Kshama Shiva Dhatri Swaha Swadha Namostute' three times and offer them at Maa's feet.
अष्टमी पुष्पांजलि: हाथों में फूल और बेलपत्र लेकर 'ॐ जयन्ती मङ्गला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी। दुर्गा क्षमा शिवा धात्री स्वाहा स्वधा नमोऽस्तु ते॥' तीन बार बोलें और माँ के चरणों में अर्पित करें।
Step 6
Recite the Durga Chalisa, or the Durga Saptashati (at least the Devi Kavach, Argala and Keelak stotras).
दुर्गा चालीसा या दुर्गा सप्तशती (कम से कम देवी कवच, अर्गला और कीलक स्तोत्र) का पाठ करें।
Step 7
If your family does Kanya Pujan on Ashtami, invite nine girls and a boy, wash their feet and serve halwa, puri and chana (see the Kanya Pujan guide).
यदि आपके परिवार में अष्टमी को कन्या पूजन होता है, तो नौ कन्याओं और एक बालक को बुलाकर पैर धोएँ और हलवा, पूरी व चना परोसें (कन्या पूजन गाइड देखें)।
Step 8
Sandhi Puja at the junction of Ashtami and Navami: offer 108 lotus flowers and light 108 diyas while chanting the Navarna mantra 'ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे'.
अष्टमी-नवमी के संधिकाल में संधि पूजा: नवार्ण मंत्र 'ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे' का जाप करते हुए 108 कमल अर्पित करें और 108 दीप जलाएँ।
Step 9
Havan (optional): offer havan samagri and ghee into the fire with the same mantra, ending with a coconut as purnahuti.
हवन (वैकल्पिक): इसी मंत्र से अग्नि में हवन सामग्री और घी की आहुति दें, और नारियल से पूर्णाहुति करें।
Step 10
Sing the aarti 'Jai Ambe Gauri' with the whole family, waving the ghee lamp and camphor before Maa.
पूरे परिवार के साथ 'जय अम्बे गौरी' आरती गाएँ, माँ के सामने घी का दीपक और कपूर घुमाएँ।
Step 11
Distribute prasad. Those keeping the Ashtami fast break it after the puja or after Kanya Pujan.
प्रसाद बाँटें। अष्टमी का व्रत रखने वाले पूजा या कन्या पूजन के बाद व्रत खोलें।

Blessings of this puja

Ashtami is the most powerful day of Navratri. Worship on this day, especially the Sandhi Puja, is believed to bring the Mother's protection from every fear and obstacle, strength and courage for the year ahead, and the fulfilment of heartfelt wishes.

अष्टमी नवरात्रि का सबसे शक्तिशाली दिन है। माना जाता है कि इस दिन की पूजा, विशेषकर संधि पूजा, से माँ हर भय और बाधा से रक्षा करती हैं, आने वाले वर्ष के लिए शक्ति और साहस देती हैं और मन की मनोकामनाएँ पूरी करती हैं।
