Kali Puja, also called Shyama Puja, is celebrated on the new-moon night of Kartik, the night of Diwali, in Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Mithila. The Goddess took the fierce form of Kali to destroy Raktabija, the demon whose every drop of blood became another demon, and she is worshipped to remove fear, ignorance and evil. The puja is done late at night (Nishita kaal) with red hibiscus, lamps and the conch; homes are lit with rows of diyas (Deepanwita), and great crowds gather at Dakshineswar and Kalighat. The evening before, on Bhoot Chaturdashi, Bengali families light fourteen lamps and eat fourteen kinds of greens.

काली पूजा, जिसे श्यामा पूजा भी कहते हैं, कार्तिक अमावस्या यानी दीपावली की रात बंगाल, असम, ओडिशा और मिथिला में मनाई जाती है। माँ ने रक्तबीज के संहार के लिए, जिसकी हर रक्त-बूँद से एक नया दानव जन्म लेता था, काली का उग्र रूप धारण किया; भय, अज्ञान और बुराई के नाश के लिए उनकी पूजा होती है। पूजा देर रात (निशीथ काल) में लाल गुड़हल, दीपों और शंख के साथ होती है; घरों को दीयों की कतारों (दीपान्विता) से सजाया जाता है, और दक्षिणेश्वर व कालीघाट में भारी भीड़ उमड़ती है। एक दिन पहले भूत चतुर्दशी पर बंगाली परिवार चौदह दीये जलाते हैं और चौदह प्रकार के साग खाते हैं।

Step 1
Clean the home and light rows of diyas and candles at dusk (Deepanwita).
घर की सफाई करें और संध्या को दीयों व मोमबत्तियों की कतारें जलाएँ (दीपान्विता)।
Step 2
Set up the altar in the evening: Maa Kali's idol or picture on a red cloth, a kalash with mango leaves and a coconut, and worship Lord Ganesh first.
शाम को पूजा स्थल सजाएँ: लाल कपड़े पर माँ काली की प्रतिमा या चित्र, आम के पत्ते और नारियल सहित कलश, और पहले गणेश जी की पूजा करें।
Step 3
Begin the main puja at night in Nishita kaal (around midnight); check the muhurat for your city.
मुख्य पूजा रात को निशीथ काल (लगभग मध्यरात्रि) में आरंभ करें; अपने शहर का मुहूर्त देखें।
Step 4
Offer a garland of 108 red hibiscus flowers, bel leaves, sindoor, alta, a red chunri, sweets and fruits.
108 लाल गुड़हल की माला, बेलपत्र, सिंदूर, आलता, लाल चुनरी, मिठाई और फल अर्पित करें।
Step 5
Chant 'ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः' 108 times, or recite the Kali Kavach or Kali Chalisa.
'ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः' का 108 बार जाप करें, या काली कवच अथवा काली चालीसा का पाठ करें।
Step 6
Offer bhog: khichuri, labra (mixed vegetables), begun bhaja, payesh and sweets.
भोग लगाएँ: खिचड़ी, लाबड़ा (मिश्रित सब्ज़ी), बैंगन भाजा, पायस और मिठाई।
Step 7
Light 108 diyas if you can, perform the aarti with conch and bell, and offer pushpanjali.
हो सके तो 108 दीये जलाएँ, शंख और घंटी के साथ आरती करें और पुष्पांजलि दें।
Step 8
Distribute prasad. If an idol was installed, immerse it the next day.
प्रसाद बाँटें। यदि प्रतिमा स्थापित की हो तो अगले दिन विसर्जन करें।
