History & significance

Vijayadashami, the tenth day, celebrates victory: Maa Durga's triumph over Mahishasura and Lord Rama's over Ravana. In Bengal it is Bijoya Dashami. After the final puja, the Goddess is seen in a mirror placed in water (Darpan Visarjan), married women offer her sindoor, sweets and paan and smear sindoor on one another in the joyful Sindoor Khela, and the idol is taken in procession for visarjan to the beat of the dhak. Families then greet each other with 'Shubho Bijoya', sweets and embraces. In North India Ravana's effigy is burned at Dussehra, and many worship the Shami tree and Goddess Aparajita for success in the year ahead; in Kerala children begin their learning (Vidyarambham) on this day.

The Ritual

Step-by-step puja vidhi

Scroll the path — a lamp lights for every step.

  1. Step 1

Bathe in the morning and perform the final puja of Maa Durga with flowers, sweets and fruits; in Bengal, dahi-chura (curd and flattened rice) is offered.

  2. Step 2

Aparajita puja: draw an eight-petalled lotus with kumkum on a plate or the floor, place Aparajita flowers or akshat on it, and pray to Devi Aparajita for victory and protection.

  3. Step 3

    Shami puja: offer water, roli, akshat and a diya to a Shami tree or sprig, saying '

  4. Step 4

Darpan Visarjan: place a mirror in a bowl of water before the Goddess, see her reflection, and offer your farewell prayers.

  5. Step 5

Sindoor Khela (Debi Boron): married women offer sindoor at Maa's forehead and feet, feed her sweets and offer paan, then apply sindoor to each other with blessings.

  6. Step 6

Kalash visarjan (if you kept a Navratri kalash): take the coconut as prasad, sprinkle the kalash water around the home and immerse the barley sprouts, keeping a few as blessing.

  7. Step 7

Take the idol in procession for visarjan with dhak, conch and the chant 'Asche bochor abar hobe' (come again next year).

  8. Step 8

Greet everyone with 'Shubho Bijoya' or 'Happy Dussehra', touch elders' feet for blessings and share sweets; in the North, watch the Ravan Dahan in the evening.
